Create DIY farm animal finger puppets out of felt and embroidery thread. They are so cute and easy to make, no sewing machine skills required. These kid friendly puppets are inspired by one of our favorite children’s books, The Little Blue Truck! You might also like our farm animal classroom decor and our modern farmhouse playroom.

DIY FARM ANIMAL FINGER PUPPETS INSPIRED BY LITTLE BLUE TRUCK

We’re still going with the Little Blue Truck Tot School theme this week. I told you we love this book!  We’ll be braving a long flight with Logan in a few months, so I thought I’d make him a quiet book to help keep him occupied on the trip. If you’ve never heard of a quiet book, it’s a book with quiet activities for kids to do. The pieces are typically made out of fabric or felt and the pieces are typically movable. Scroll down for free finger puppet templates!

For the first page in Logan’s quiet book, I decided to make farm animal finger puppets – little blue truck style, of course. If you don’t want to make a whole book, you could just make a single activity page. During Tot School this week, Logan played with his puppet page. We read Little Blue Truck together and Logan naturally matched his finger puppets to the animals on the page. We worked on language skills, sequencing and fine motor skills. This is what I love so much about non-directive play at this age, all of these lessons are learned naturally and organically through play.

HOW TO MAKE DIY FARM ANIMAL FINGER PUPPETS

To make these finger puppets, download the templates (scroll to the bottom) and cut out the pieces out of felt. You’ll need to cut out 2 of the large finger puppet pieces per puppet. You can sew the pieces together or use embroidery thread, like I did. I first used fabric glue to attach the ears/cow horns/frog eyes and sandwiched them in between the large finger puppet pieces before using embroidery thread to sew them together. Let me know if you have any questions!

You’ll need the following materials for this project:

Felt Fabric Sheets

Embroidery Thread

Embroidery Needles

No Sew Fabric Glue

Wiggle Eyes

Save and print out the Pig and Chicken Template & the Cow and Frog Template. These templates are very rough doodles that you can use to create these finger puppets or you can always draw your own. Check out our easy DIY cow costume and little lamb donut pops.

  3. Hi. My nephew loves Little Blue Truck, it’s one of the few things he’s interested in as he has some special needs. Do you have a template or anything for the truck part of this? I thought I’d try to make this for him as part of his birthday present. Thanks!
