When I was pregnant with Amelia, I craved hamburgers and root beer. Like crrrrraaaaved them. Hamburgers are just okay now, but I’m still a total root beer addict. I thought I’d have to part with my beloved root beer now that I’m trying to lose the baby weight, but I just discovered A&W TEN (found at Safeway, along with 7 UP TEN, Sunkist TEN and Canada Dry TEN). Only 10 little calories per serving and it tastes just as awesome! I can still have an occasional treat and it won’t completely wreck my diet. For me, a successful diet is one that isn’t so rigid and allows me to splurge once in awhile.

Speaking of rigid diets, my family recently attempted a paleo diet. It follows what the cavemen ate – basically fruit, veggies and meat. Everything from scratch – sauces, dressings, everything. The science behind it really makes sense and I envy those that have turned it into a lifestyle, but this mama needs a carb once in awhile. Plus, I  just don’t enjoy spending the majority of my day in the kitchen making everything from scratch. I also felt like I completely wrecked my diet anytime I splurged, which just made me wreck it even worse (I’m stubborn like that). While I lost a few pounds while on the diet, it wasn’t something I could personally maintain.

So what has worked for me you ask? Well, I’ve been on weight watchers for the past month and I’ve lost 15 pounds so far without feeling like I’m majorly restricted. I have a lot more work to do, but I feel like this is a lifestyle change that I can keep up with. I can enjoy an A&W TEN root beer float popsicle AND lose weight. I’d call that a win/win! Want to make these popsicles even more WW friendly? Use lite cool whip in place of ice cream. Totally up to you and how many points you can afford to “spend” on your treat! Both options are YUM!

Ingredients (makes 6)

2 cups A&W TEN Root Beer

2 scoops vanilla ice cream (or lite cool whip)

*Dixie cups, popsicle sticks, a cupcake pan and saran wrap or foil is also needed.

Instructions: Blend A&W TEN and vanilla ice cream until smooth. Pour into dixie cups. Place a piece of saran wrap or foil over each cup. Cut a slit in the middle and place the popsicle stick in middle. Place cups on a cupcake pan and freeze overnight. Once frozen, peel dixie cups off of popsicles and enjoy!

Visit the Just For U website for a coupon for a free 2L of any flavor of the TEN calorie products (7UP Ten, Sunkist Ten, A&W Ten, Canada Dry Ten). Offer available from 5/12 – 5/19, while supplies last. I purchased my A&W TEN at Safeway, where you can find all of these products and coupon. Follow DPSG on Twitter and Facebook.
