Craft: Bird Seed Ornaments

April 3, 2015 By Vanessa Leave a Comment

Bird Feeder Ornament 2

Looking for a fun project to do with your kids over the weekend? These bird seed ornaments are fun to make and the perfect craft for kids to help with! They can work on their pouring and measuring skills, and you can even incorporate a lesson about birds while doing this activity. We recently hosted a play date and made these bird feeders with the kids. We used Easter themed cookie cutters, my favorite was the carrot, but you could use any type of cookie cutter you’d like. My almost 5 year old loves watching the birds nibble at his ornament that hangs in our backyard. These ornaments would also make for great baby shower or wedding favors!

MATERIALS

4 cups bird seed

1 envelope gelatin

1/2 cup water

3/4 cup flour

3 tablespoons corn syrup

Cookie Cutters

Straws

String

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Mix 1 envelope of gelatin, 1/2 cup water, 3/4 cup flour and 3 tablespoons corn syrup together in a mixing bowl. Add in bird seed and mix.

Step 2: Spoon bird seed mixture into cookie cutters. Make sure the bird seed is tightly packed in. It might be easier for children to use their hands for this part.

Step 3: Cut a straw into fourths and place the pieces into the bird seed before the harden, as shown in the photo below.

Step 4: Allow to fully harden overnight before removing the bird seed ornaments from the cookie cutters. Remove the straw and loop a piece of string or ribbon through the hole to tie onto a tree for the birds.
