Hello, SVC readers! I’m Shelly back from Dolen Diaries to share one of our Industrial Inspired Planter Box garage date night with you! What’s a garage date night!?! Well, my husband and I can’t always go out for date nights but still feel it is very important for us to spend quality time together. Since he loved to spend time his free time I decided to join him in the garage and get some quality time in while checking off the to do list. After the kids go to bed we pop out into the garage and work on a project together. It’s SO much fun and I’ve learned a ton! We both love a bit of industrial flare so we decided to make a Industrial Inspired Planter Box for the front of the house.
For the planter box you’ll need two 4′ x 18″ pieces of pressure treated plywood;
two pieces of 18″ x 18″;
and 4 pieces of 2″ x 2″. *Since our boxes were going to be place in the garden space in front of the house we didn’t put a bottom on our boxes.
To start you’ll nail two of the 2″ x 2″s to the 18″ x 18″
Nail {or staple using an air staple gun like we did} the long 4″ x 18″ sides to the 2″ x 2″
Repeat for the other side.
Attach the other end piece and you have your planter box.
Because it was so long and there would be a lot of pressure on the sides once the dirt was inside we decided to add a few supports inside.
Now that the shell is complete it’s time to add the industrial spin!
Cut and pre-drill holes into metal flashing.
Attach the flashing strips to the planter box using roofing screws.
Line the next flashing strip up so there aren’t any gaps.
Continue until the pressure treated plywood is totally covered.
Do the same for the ends of the box. There are some gaps but no worries there is a very cool industrial plan for that!
Attach a flat iron piece to the middle of each side of the planter box with bolts.
For the ends pre-drill angle iron pieces and
Bolt those pieces to the corners to finish them off.
We made two of these industrial inspired planter boxes and I have to say I love how they turned out!
We placed them in front of the house and transplanted some grasses and lilies inside. They added the little industrial touch we were looking for and I love how the silver and black looks with the green plants.
