My toddler is obsessed with Finding Dory and anything ocean related at that moment. In fact, we’re planning an ocean themed birthday party for her and my son this summer. I’m already in party planning mode and recently tested out one of my party favor ideas – a mermaid towel tail! It turned out so cute that I just had to share! This is a half no-sew and half sew tutorial, and so easy to make. If you can sew a straight line with your sewing machine, than you are good to go! My favorite part about this towel is that the mermaid “fins” can be taken out and it can be used as a regular wrap to dry off with at the pool. Grab your supplies, including Little Swimmers® Disposable Swimpants, and let’s get crafting!

DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Head to Sam’s Club to purchase Huggies® Little Swimmers® Disposable Swimpants, so your little one is ready to play in the water! They have the cutest Finding Dory prints that my 2 year old went crazy over!

Step 2: Measure the child from the waist down and cut the towel at that length. Most toddlers will require half a towel length.

Step 3: Fold the cut side down 2 inches and attach sewing pins to hold it in place.

Step 4: Sew a straight stitch across the folded piece, toward the bottom of the fold, making sure that there is a little pocket to thread the ribbon through. If you aren’t comfortable with a sewing machine, you could always attach no-sew velcro to the ends.

Step 5: Tie the end of the ribbon around a popsicle stick and thread the popsicle stick through the towel loop. Once you have enough ribbon to tie around your child’s waist, cut the ribbon.

Step 6: Gather the opposite end of the towel in two pieces and wrap a hair tie around each piece, so it looks like a mermaid tail.
