I would love to be an interior decorator one day. I adore the design process and the little details of a room. I love it when you can walk into a room and immediately get a sense of who that family is. I’m still working on my own detailed nursery post, but in the meantime I thought it would be fun to feature some of my favorite nurseries and the designer moms behind them. Lauren of With Two Cats did an absolutely amazing job on her darling Violet’s 7×12 nursery. We definitely have similar taste – I adore her grey walls and Etsy finds! Lauren was sweet enough to answer a few questions about Violet’s nursery:
Q: What was the inspiration for Violet’s room?
A: I stumbled across the curtains on Urban Outfitter’s website and fell in love! They were the jumping off point for the rest of the space.
Q: What was this room before it became a nursery?
A: It was a mish mash of my art space, CD and book storage, and a lot of other random stuff. It didn’t reallly have an ‘identity’ per say. We knew when we bought the house that it would one day become the nursery so we didn’t put a lot of effort into it until we got pregnant.
Q: What’s your favorite thing in the room or about the room?
A: My favorite thing is definitely the window seat. It’s a cozy space to read, daydream, and relax and it feels like you are in a tree house because there are two big trees right outside.
Q: What was your biggest challenge putting this space together?
A: The size and shape of the space. It’s very small, oddly shaped, and has angled walls. This prevented us from really hanging anything on them and required a lot of space planning to ensure furniture would fit. In the end I think it enhances the space and inspired us to be creative with the hand-painted tree mural and fabric leaves.
Q: What was your biggest splurge in the room?
A: Our biggest splurge is the crib bedding. It cost more than the crib, but I really love the punch of color it adds to the room. I couldn’t find any off-the-shelf bedding that I loved, so we had parts custom made and bought the other pieces separately which upped the cost.
Q: Any decorating tips for parents-to-be starting this process?
A: Find something that inspires you (in our case, the curtains), and build your design from it. Planning helps the room to feel cohesive and also keeps you within your budget. We definitely achieved our budgetary goal of less than $1000 coming in at $885.47. That includes new wood floors, beadboard and trim, paint, furniture, and decor.
