Today is the last day of the Father’s Day Gift Guide and I’m excited to announce DK Publishing as one of our sponsors. Still unsure what to get your significant other or father? Browse DK Father’s Day books and help him learn a new skill or brush up on one of his favorite subjects. They have books covering a wide variety of topics, from whiskey to digital photography. Mr. Crafty Nest has enjoyed reading his new books from DK, read on to hear what he has to say.

Mr. Crafty Nest’s Manly Opinion:

DK Books was kind enough to send me three books to review from their sports line.

The Essential Golf Skills has key tips and techniques to improve your game. It has 176 full color pages with an index for easy reference. This book is awesome for someone that is a beginning golfer and wants to learn the basics about the game and the clubs you’ll be using. It’s a lot of information in a compact sized paperback. We have quite a few golf courses in Arizona if you haven’t heard, and actually have a large one about a half mile from our home! I took a golf class in college years ago, but didn’t learn very much because the instructors were too busy showing the female students “good form.” Yeah, real professional. Ahem! Basically, get this book if you’re a golf newb and you’ll at least have your basics down in your head, but you’ll need to practice what you learn out on the greens.

The Essential Strength Training Skills has key tips and techniques to improve your physique. Like the Golf Skills book, it has the same exact page count with index. It’s full color as well. It starts out with the basics of strength training, and goes into details about specific exercises for specific body parts, complete with illustrations of the exercises. It touches on eating right as well. Towards the end of the book, they provide sample training programs with different goals in mind, like core strength training programs vs. muscular endurance programs. Back in my high school and college days, I was a gym rat: I was there every single day. So, I know my fair share about nutrition and body sculpting science. Don’t ask me if I still work out, though, as I might end up crying in front of you out of embarrassment. I intend to get back into the gym soon though, and I’ll use this book to come up with a program that will ease me back into a routine. The book has enough info to come up with more advanced programs as well, so I’m really excited about using this book as a tool to get back into shape, not just reading it. It will be easy to pack in my gym bag because of its small footprint.

The Sports Book has twice as big of a footprint as the other books in my review, and is THICK! 448 pages thick to be exact. It has a similar, minimalist art style similar to the Essential Strength Training Skills guide. The Essential Golf Skills guide has pics of real people instead. The Sports Book covers Olympic Games, Team Sport, Athletics, Combat Sports, etc… Pretty much any sport you can think of is covered here in encyclopedia-like detail. From Lawn Bowling to Jujitsu, you are covered! I will be using this guide to teach Baby Crafty Nest about all the sports of the world, so he can be well informed and pick a sport that sounds great to him. His Dad will learn a thing or two as well! I didn’t know the proper form for the batter in a game of Cricket before, but now I do with the excellent descriptions along with the easy to understand illustrations of each stance. This book will find a nice home at the center of our coffee table, and will be used as a bedtime story book for my son in a couple of years, Haha!
