I have to admit that I read a ton of baby books before I got pregnant. Sure, call me an overachiever but it took me 2 years to get knocked up so I had a lot of time on my hands. What To Expect When Your Expecting was actually the very first baby related book I read, long before I had a baby. I actually found it helpful to read this book before getting pregnant. I wanted to know exactly what I was getting myself into, I’m a planner after all. When I finally saw those 2 pink lines, I found the book to be a great reference guide. You know, to look up things like: “Is it NORMAL that my baby hiccups non-stop in the womb?” or “Is it NORMAL for my boobs to leak while I’m pregnant?”. Yes and yes, both are totally normal. This book saved me from hormonally calling my midwife at 1am (much like drunk dialing, minus the alcohol).

While I was pregnant with Logan, I figured I would move on to reading What To Expect The First Year (I already admitted to my overachiever problem, see above.) I’m so glad I read it BEFORE he arrived because who in the heck has time to read anything with a newborn (colicky) baby?! Much like What To Expect When Your Expecting, I used this book as a reference guide during Logan’s first year. This book also saved me from making a few of those omg-i’m-a-new-mommy-i-don’t-know-what-i’m-doing calls to Logan’s pediatrician. I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have appreciated me waking him up at 3am to tell me that it’s ok if my breastfed baby’s poo smells exactly like butter.

It has actually been awhile since I’ve read a baby book (shocker, right?). There just isn’t enough time in the day, which is why I like the What To Expect Books. There is a huge index in the back of their books, so you can quickly look up your concern or question. They are set up to be used as reference books, a guide that you can quickly go to for an answer. In addition to the What To Expect When Your Expecting book, I was also sent the What To Expect The Second Year book to review. Now that Logan’s walking and getting into EVERYTHING, I’ve enjoyed the safety chapter in the book. Did you know that poinsettias and mistletoe are poisonous? Skip those holiday plants this year. Oh and all of the oleanders we have planted in our front yard – poisonous. Good to know.
