Craft: DIY How to Train Your Dragon Headband

February 17, 2019 By Vanessa Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Universal Pictures. The opinions and text are all mine. This DIY dragon headband is the perfect kid craft to do before watching How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World! #HowToTrainYourDragon

We are counting down the days until How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World hits theaters on February 22nd! We adore this animated franchise and we’re so excited to meet Light Fury, a new love interest for Toothless, in the new film. My daughter has her eye on a Light Fury plush to match her Toothless plush.

Naturally, we crafted up a Toothless and Light Fury dragon headband to wear to the film. Keep on reading for the instructions and headband template. If you aren’t fond of headbands, you could always add a pin to the back and wear it on your jacket like a brooch.

The films have many great messages for kids, but they also have great lessons for the parents. Like Hiccup, my kids march to the beat of their own drum and are uniquely special. I have had to learn how to harness their many amazing talents and let go of some of my preconceived expectations. When I give my children permission to be themselves, instead of who I think they should be, they thrive and shine. I can’t wait to see what lessons the new film has in store for me!

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON HEADBAND SUPPLIES

Only a few simple craft supplies are needed for this dragon headband. You can find all of these supplies at your local craft store or online. Keep your eye peeled for the colored wiggly eyes, those might be be hardest to find. If you don’t see headbands at the craft store, you can grab a pack at any beauty supply store. You could also use a regular plastic headband if you wish.

HOW TO MAKE A HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON HEADBAND

Print out the free template, which can be found below, and cut out the Toothless and Light Fury silhouettes. I trimmed off the extra side bumps on the Light Fury template to look more like the character. Trace the Light Fury template onto white glitter foam paper. Trace the Toothless template onto black glitter foam paper.

Cut around the tracing marks. Peel the sticky backing off of the characters and stick to a place of felt. You can add a little hot glue to make sure it adheres well. Trim the felt around the characters, so only the glitter foam is showing from the front.

Hot glue a pair of blue wiggle eyes to the white shape and a pair of green wiggle eyes to the black shape.

Hot glue the foam shapes to the black elastic headband, overlapping the white on top of the black as shown in the photo below. Make sure to add a dot of hot glue to the overlapping pieces.

Show off your new headband and go see How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. We can’t wait to see how Toothless discovers Light Fury! Watch the trailer below and make plans to see it in theaters, IMAX and RealD 3D February 22. Get tickets: http://unvrs.al/DragonsTix.

I'm Vanessa and it's my mission in life to spread my love of hot glue guns and glitter to others. I suffer from craft ADHD, regularly working on at least 10 projects at the same time and my craft room looks like a tornado hit it. My first craft book, Party in a Jar, was published in 2014. I look forward to crafting with you!
