As part of our Native American studies this week, we of course had to have some fun with making our own dream catchers. But here’s the “catch” – as we went about making (in my opinion) a gorgeous, flowing, whimsical dream catcher for my daughter out of craft scraps and broken jewelry, I realized she wasn’t having all that much fun. The work was a bit too tedious and wasn’t drawing her in like I always hope for in our tot school adventures – so we scrapped the scraps {secretly I finished one for her, one for her brother and one for a gift all while sipping some wine and having mommy craft time!}.
Enter plan B…..
Fluorescent, kid-friendly DIY dream catchers!
Supplies:
-round hoop – we used cut out portions of whicker paper plate holders – 66 cents for a pack of six at the thrift store
-1 package of nylon loops – remember these fun little things from when you were a kid? They usually come with a kit that includes the loom and hook to make pot holders etc. They now come in an array of colors including primary, patriotic, pastels and of course what my gal gravitates towards…..FLUORESCENT!
-feathers
-hot glue
-scissors
-that’s it!!
Directions:
Here’s what makes it so much more appropriate for pre-schoolers – my daughter easily spread the loops out all over the base while her brother handed her the colors (okay and we might have flung them like rubber bands at each other too) – the teamwork time gave us color recognition for my two year old and fine motor skill work and pattern development for my daughter who’s almost four. We then cut a few loops to hang at the bottom, selected just the right feathers to hot glue and waa laa – an eye AND dream catching keepsake! Those leftover feathers certainly don’t go to waste with this project either because all good Indian warriors need a beautiful feather headdress of course!!
*Lesson learned: the lesson was more for Mommy this time – never be afraid to stop mid-project and re-evaluate if it’s fun/entertaining/educational for your child. If it’s not, no harm done, move on! Life is simply too short to spend time on something that doesn’t make you beam with delight!
