(mama talk) baby proofing and toddler proofing

Disclosure: I was not financially compensated for this post. I received a discount on the products for review purposes. The opinions are completely my own based on my experience.

A couple months ago I stumbled across a story on a blog. It was a story that kept me up at night as a mom. It was Meghan’s story (warning: you may need a tissue box or 2 while reading this story). For those of you who just can’t bear to read another tragic story (there have unfortunately been several lately), the short version is that this beautiful child was taken much too soon by something preventable – a dresser that wasn’t strapped to the wall. Oh how my heart hurts for her family.  Meghan’s mom told her story for one reason – to prevent this from happening to another child.

I felt a pang of guilt after I read Meghan’s story. That could have been us. That could have been Logan. Aside from a few outlet plugs and moving breakables up high, we really didn’t baby proof or toddler proof. Thankfully, Logan was a pretty calm baby and we typically only had to tell him “no” once for him to understand what was off limits (he’s good at testing his limits in other ways lol). But still. That could have been Logan. That could have been any of our babies. It only takes a second.

After a restless night, I tracked down Dani from the Babyproofing Shop in Arizona (that’s her below, working her baby proofing magic). We scheduled a consultation appointment and met with her that same week. During the consultation, we walked through the house and we discussed what needed to be baby proofed and our options. Dani knows her stuff and I appreciated that she didn’t try to up-sell us (because she totally could to a mom who was ready to put padded walls up). Once we came up with a plan, we scheduled an installation time and Dani brought over her power tools (woohoo for a lady that knows how to handle a drill!).

I can’t recommend Dani and the Babyproofing Shop enough! She got our entire house baby proofed in under 2 hours and just in time for our youngest to start crawling. Remember how I said Logan was a calm baby? Amelia is exactly the opposite lol. Now that she’s mobile, this child is keeping me on my toes! Thankfully, I can rest easier at night knowing that our dressers our strapped to the walls, our cabinets are latched and we even added an extra lock up high to our main doors.

If you are in the Phoenix, AZ area, I highly recommend giving Dani a call for a baby proofing consultation. You can contact her at 602-363-9249 or email her at danizufelt@gmail.com. Her website is currently down, but you can see The Baby Proofing Shop on yelp (take note that the number on yelp has changed). I truly cannot say enough good things about her and how awesome is this service that she offers?! It makes baby proofing totally easy and painless, plus the price is extremely reasonable and includes supplies. If you live in AZ and still need to get those dressers strapped down, give Dani a ring (like NOW!). How awesome of a gift would this make for a baby shower?! For my out of state readers, check out Meghan’s Hope website for information on how to secure your furniture.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you Meghan’s mom for sharing your daughter’s story. It made a huge impact on me and within my own circle of mom friends.

Every parent in the house must do child proofing. It may take a little time but safety comes first.
