Our new little family tradition is movie night Fridays. It’s a fun way to reconnect as a family after a long week of preschool and work. In celebration of Logan doing so well at preschool lately (the first couple weeks were an adjustment) and Amelia turning 2 months old (how did that happen?!), I planned a special Little Mermaid themed movie night for my kiddos and we invited the grandparents over for some Under The Sea fun. I had a blast styling this Disney princess party for my Disney loving family!
Pre-movie night, Logan got to paint a miniature wooden treasure chest while I decorated. He was so excited for our special movie night and this was a great way to keep him from asking “now is it time for movie night?” for the hundredth time. I found plastic aqua plates at Walmart that made for a good art tray, covered a kids table in white paper and let him go to town. Treasure chest painting would make for a fun kid-friendly party activity for any ocean themed party!
While Logan was painting, I decorated. After deciding on the color scheme – purples and aquas, I created ribbon bunting for the backdrop. Using different ribbons, I simply tied them to a piece of rope and hung it up. A little time consuming, but super easy to make and it adds so much to the party. I also crafted up a miniature ribbon bunting for the cake. Speaking of cake, my mom made an amazing ruffled ombre cake out of fondant for our (ahem, over the top) movie night. We sprinkled dark brown cane sugar on the top to look like beach sand and I found The Little Mermaid figurines to help embellish it. Logan was quick to pull Ariel and Sebastian off the cake to play with them during the movie!
I originally wanted to fill the 2 large vases in the back with water beads, a cheap and easy decorating trick, but I didn’t buy enough to fill both jars so I ended up just filling the vases with purple water. Add some ribbon and a shell to the vase and voila, a pretty table filler. While I’m giving away my party tricks, see the tablecloth? It’s really a purple sheet under fishing net! On the menu was edible oyster pearl cookies and sea weed grapes on skewers. Oh and you can’t watch a movie without popcorn – aqua popcorn, colored using edible cake decorating “dust”. We sipped our “ocean water” drinks out of aqua colored mason jars and purple striped straws.
I found glow in the dark pitch forks in the Halloween section, which made for perfect King Triton trident favors! Amelia got a handmade sea shell headband as her party favor. The movie night was a huge hit and we’re all excited for the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray/DVD release of The Little Mermaid from the Disney vault on October 1st!
