I am Brave and Beautiful – a beauty movement that is sweeping the globe. Colbie Caillat started it with her recent song and video called TRY. My blogging friend Megan of Brassy Apple wanted to push this movement along and invited women from all over to share what they looked like without make up and I joined in!! Colbie’s song says, “Take your make up off. Let your hair down… Look into the mirror at yourself, Do you like you? Cause I like you… “

Megan and her friend Cobi of Peacefrom6pieces have been the team behind this whole project. Their worldwide vision included creating their own video inspired by the song TRY. The talent of Robbins Creative made it possible for them to pull it off. You have to click play and see the beauty and bravery displayed and you might even recognize a few faces in there.

Me along with 101+ other blogging women from different backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, ages, shapes and sizes have decided to be Brave and Beautiful! You can join in this movement too by sharing what you look like without makeup on. You don’t need a blog either! Just tag your photo with #IamBraveAndBeautiful on Instgram and search the hashtag to see who else has joined in. ALSO, if you tag it with a second hashtag – #ColbieTRY we just might be able to get Colbie Caillat’s attention since she was the inspiration behind it all!

Are you brave and beautiful? I am, here I go!

The one thing I hate about social media is that we often only get to see the highlight reels of peoples lives. Scrolling through Instagram, you see the amazing dinner one mom cooked up for her family as you are driving through a drive thru to grab dinner because there just weren’t enough hours in the day. Scrolling through Facebook, you see how put together and manicured another mother is when you are covered in spit up and haven’t even had a chance to shower. And don’t even get me started on Pinterest. Don’t get me wrong, I love social media and I think it can be used in positive ways, but sometimes this stuff can make me feel inadequate.

When I first heard about the Brave and Beautiful project, I wanted to run and hide underneath my own highlight reels. My 14 month old JUST started sleeping in more than 3 hour increments (knock on lots of wood). I’ve been in survival mode for the past year and I’m just now clawing my way back to civilization (with a little help from Starbucks). On top of not sleeping much, I’m also at the highest weight I’ve ever been. I put in so much work getting it off pre-Amelia that it just sucks to have to start back at the beginning again. How’s that for a highlight reel? You can imagine how I felt when I was asked to post an unedited photo of myself for the masses to see. I definitely wasn’t feeling very brave or beautiful. But then I looked at my son, who tells me how pretty I am everyday. And I looked at my daughter, who I want to raise to be confident in her own beautiful skin. They make me brave.

You know what I see in that photo on the bottom? I see a mom who has been up late comforting her teething daughter. I see a mom who might not have had time to make an elaborate, Pinterest-worthy dinner, but who had time to play chase with her son at the park. I see a mom who is just trying to do her best and sometimes fails, but keeps on going and learning and doing better next time. And that, my friends, is beautiful.
