My grandmother lived through the depression. She also grew up in a time where women were homemakers. I think these two factors really formed the woman she was, and why she loved entertaining. She is the one that planted an entertaining seed in me, and I think about her every day.
I remember sitting in her kitchen watching her prepare Thanksgiving dinner. It would begin very early, maybe 7 in the morning. By the time I woke up, I could smell the faint smell of turkey in the air. I would sit in awe and watch her chop, stir, sauté, and kneed. At some point she would ask for my help, which of course I was totally excited about.
Around 2pm it was time to set the table, my favorite part of the process. The gorgeous Italian linens, polished silver, crystal classes, and china would appear out of the hutch that only opened for holiday celebrations. And then fresh flowers would be arranged, and table décor scavenged from around the house. Lastly, name cards were written in gorgeous script and placed on the table, ending with the lighting of taper candles. It was perfect.
Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday, because of the memories I hold in my heart of my grandmother. So as I scroll through blogs and websites and gather these unique Thanksgiving tablescape ideas, I can’t help but think about her, and how happy it would make her.
